An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is a creature that has developed to the fullest extent. In the context of humans, the word adult can have meanings that are related to legal or social notions. A legal adult is, as opposed to "minors" (also known as non-adults), is someone who is older than the average age and thus considered to be independent, responsible as well as self-sufficient. They are also known as "majors", they can also be said to have reached the age of majority. The age when a child turns an adult legally is 18, however, the definition of maturity is different based on the country or legal system, as well as the psychological condition of the child.

The period of human development that is when physical and mental maturity has been reached. Adulthood is typically believed to start around the age of 20 or 21. The typical middle-age begins around 40 years old, then it will be around 60. The three major stages of adulthood are early adulthood (from the mid 30s until late 60s), middle adulthood from mid-30s until late-60s and then later adulthood, (mid-60s up to the time of death). The physical maturation process is complete by the time we reach the early years of adulthood (20-40s) however, height and weight might rise a bit. When we are young our physical capabilities are at their highest, including muscular strength, reaction time, sensory abilities, and the functioning of our heart.
